“Hakuna Matata! It means no worries for the rest of your days”. But when was the last time you went all Hakuna Matata on your life?
I can tell you when mine was. On Saturday. When I was dancing like a maniac on a public beach here in Mauritius, to “Hakuna Matata”, “Don’t worry be happy”, “The Bear Necessities” and some other great, happy tunes.
I took part in something called Secret Sunrise which is part silent disco, part meditation and mindfulness session, part yoga lesson, part dance like no one’s watching.
It’s probably one of the best things I’ve done for myself in a long, long time.
I literally didn’t care what I looked like or what those passing by thought.
I trunk-bumped strangers (trunk-bumping = fist-bumping when you’re pretending to be an elephant), I jumped around like a monkey, I walked like a soldier, like a penguin and like a zombie.
I danced in the water and in the sand. And as I danced I listened to the words to these various songs coming through the headphones:
What a wonderful phrase
Ain’t no passing craze
It means no worries
For the rest of your days
It’s a problem free philosophy
And I really listened to those words:
A problem-free philosophy.
Then before I had time to think, the lyrics from the next song were printing themselves on my brain:
“Don’t worry, be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be happy”
When I moved from London to Mauritius a couple of years ago I did a pretty good job of giving my life the Hakuna Matata once-over (well once we’d got settled in.) There is a very chilled out vibe here, and worries and stress are far less present than back in our London days.
However there are always times when I let worries and stress get to me. Because I’m human after all.
But on Saturday I said “No more!”
Every time I fall into that trap now I’m going to read this blog post. I’m going to look at that photo of me dancing my heart out on the beach. I’m going to listen to those “no worries” songs. And I’m going to rock my inner Meredith Grey (from Grey’s Anatomy) and dance it out.
What about you?
When did you last Hakuna Matata your life?
If it was more than 24 hours ago then it’s time to do it again.
What will make you say “no worries”?
Putting things in perspective?
I mean if you’ve got a roof over your head, food in the kitchen and you’re in good health then you’re pretty much rocking this thing called life!
Watching something that makes you laugh?
My current faves are Peter Kay’s Car Share, Modern Family and, of course, Friends.
A long walk in nature?
Strap on some comfy shoes and walk that stress out of you.
Some crazy kitchen dancing?
Crank up the volume to your favourite tunes and dance it the hell out of your head and your body.
Losing yourself in a good book?
Choose a real page-turner and leave those worries far behind you.
Are you still lost in a world of worries and stress?
In that case in the words of Bobby McFerrin:
“Here I give you my phone number*
When you worry call me**, I make you happy”

If you are in Mauritius I can’t recommend Secret Sunrise enough – far better than any medication and far cheaper than retail therapy!
If you’re not then hunt out what might do the trick for you locally – what funky classes or activities are there near you that will help you say Hakuna Matata and no worries?
Over to you now lovely – Hakuna Matata the shit out of your life, because you know, it’s way too short.
If you’re struggling to find the energy or motivation to give yourself a kick up the a** when it comes to your life and loving it, then grab my 10 day guide to falling (back) in love with your life here.
P.S. If you want to watch us Secret Sunrising (and very much applying our own Hakuna Matata) then subscribe to my YouTube channel here so you can check out this week’s episode of Sophie: Raw and Unpolished when it’s live on Friday.
Oh and in case you were wondering, I have zero affiliation with Secret Sunrise or the people behind it, I just bloody loved it so much that I have to shout about it from the rooftops!!!
